Rita Y. (Martineau) (Durand) Matte

Rita Y. (Martineau) (Durand) Matte, died after a brief illness, at her son Paul’s home in Nashua, NH on August 13, 2017. She was born on April 26, 1925 in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Rita was an accomplished seamstress who sewed for her family. She worked at St. Joseph’s Cemetery as a secretary and later at Lowell City Hall in the Building Inspector’s Office. Rita was a long time parishioner of the former Ste. Jeanne d’Arc Parish.

Rita was married to Robert Durand for 21 years before he died in 1967. Together, they were the parents of four sons and one daughter. She married Leon Matte in 1989 and shared 24 years of marriage with him before his death in 2014.

She loved spending time with her friends, especially the Spaghetti Girls, and playing golf in Florida with her husband, Leon. She enjoyed cooking and playing a variety of board/card games with her family.

Rita’s gift for engaging the person she was with will be greatly missed. She never stopped expressing her unconditional love for her children and grandchildren. As a wife and mother, she served as a role model and was an awesome inspiration for three generations of family.

In the final days, she was blessed to be surrounded by the people who loved her. During her last month, a steady stream of visitors kept her company, so she was never alone. Our family would like to give a heartfelt thank you for the compassionate care provided to our mother by her son, Paul and his partner, Lisa Dumont, with whom she shared her final weeks.

Rita is survived by a sister, Simone Rousseau of West Palm Beach, Florida; her daughter, Denise of Dracut, her sons Robert and his wife Jacqueline of Wolfeboro, NH, Ronald and his partner, Nancy Perez of Lowell, Kenneth and his wife, Michelle of Jaffrey, NH, Paul and his partner, Lisa Dumont of Nashua, NH; and her stepdaughter, Elaine Matte of Port St. Luci, Florida; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur Martineau, her first husband, Robert Durand and second husband, Leon Matte.

MATTE – Mrs. Rita Y. (Martineau) (Durand) Matte, age 92, a resident of Lowell and wife of the late Robert Durand and the late Leon Matte.  In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visiting hours.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Parish of St. Rita, 158 Mammoth Road, Lowell.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Parish of St. Rita, St. Vincent de Paul Society, P.O.
