Winston C. Mooney, Jr.

LOWELL – Winston C. Mooney, Jr., age 77, a resident of Lowell, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the Lowell General Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Carolyn M. (Wells) Mooney with whom he would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary next month. 

Born in Washington, DC on June 21, 1944, he was a son of the late Winston C. and Esther (Gulick) Mooney, Sr.  He was educated in the Bohemia, Long Island school system and was a graduate of Saville High School in Long Island.  He earned his associate’s degree at Farmingdale State College and later attended Lowell Technological Institute and received a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering.

Winston was a Vietnam War Veteran having served in the United States Air Force from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1970.

Winston worked as an Engineer for Digital Corporation and later drove a school bus in the City of Lowell and for the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

He was very active with the Boy Scouts Troop 7 and the Greater Lowell Boy Scout Council for over 40 years and was an HO model railroad enthusiast.  He loved the water and had built a Starfish Sailboat that he sailed in the Long Island Sound. Winston had a sharp wit and loved history, especially the WWII era. Winston will always be remembered as a kind, loving, and caring person who always supported his family in all their endeavors.    

Surviving him is his loving wife Carolyn, and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Jessica Mooney of Wilton, NH; nine grandchildren, Cassandra Langlois, Chris Orleans, Jessica Cummings, Cory Bright, Michelle Mooney, Staci Bright, Samantha Bright, Hope Mooney and Kimberly Mooney; eleven great grandchildren, Lilly, Ares, Keira, Savannah, Ian, Veronica, Serena, Nathan, Chloe, Patricia and Ashley; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Edward and Lorraine Mooney of VA and Michael Mooney of FL; also nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister Colleen Shaw who passed in January of 2021.

Relatives and friends will be received at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME 4 Cassaway Dr., Tyngsborough, MA on Sunday, August 22 from 12 to 3 p.m.  A Prayer Service will take place immediately following at 3 p.m. in the Funeral Home. A Bereavement Gathering will follow in Chelmsford, MA. Burial with Military Honors will take place on Monday, August 23, at 12 noon in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name to the House of Hope, 812 Merrimack St., Lowell, MA 01854.
