Vera (Riegel) Sternal
…loving Mother and Grandmother
Vera (Riegel) Sternal, age 88, a resident of New Britain, CT, passed away on June 16, 2020 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH.
Born in Sremski Karlovci, Yugoslavia on October 27, 1931 she was a daughter of the late Friedrick “Fritz” and Julianna “Mila” (Banko) Riegel.
Vera grew up in Yugoslavia. The family owned a restaurant and vineyard. They lived through World War II, and were moved around finally ending up in Munich Germany. In 1952 the family immigrated to United States. The family ended up in Plainville, CT working for Cooke’s Tavern.
Her family meant the world to her and she always loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed painting, gardening and flowers, playing the accordion, and shopping. Her favorite foods were bacon and eggs, Cheetos puffs, shrimp, and lobster.
Prior to her being a Mother, she worked as a waitress at Cooke’s Tavern, and later at the Red Coach Grill.
Later in her life Vera became a born again Christian when she asked Jesus to forgive her of her sins and to become her Savior. Vera had a deep love for her God and His Word. She showed her faith through her daily Bible reading, prayers, church attendance, faithful witness of Him, and her love and generosity toward others. One of her favorite verses was Philippians 4:4-9.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters in law, Richard and Robin Sternal of Boxborough and Edward and Cynthia Sternal of Tyngsborough; a daughter and son in law, Lorraine Elliott and her husband Stephen of Palermo, ME; five grandchildren, Ryan, Elizabeth, Jack, Molly and Nick; a sister, Katherine “Kajka” Krauss of Plainville, CT; she is also survived by nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
