Sister Gertrude Coutu, age 95, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa for 74 years, died at d’Youville Senior Care Center, Lowell on Monday, September 15, 2025 after an extended illness. She was born in Lowell on February 16, 1930 and was a daughter of the late Eugene and Alma (Leboeuf) Coutu.
She professed her religious vows in 1951 and served as an elementary school teacher in Southwestern Louisiana, as well as in Lowell, and in the former St. Joseph and Notre Dame de Lourdes Schools. She served as librarian at Lowell Catholic High School from 1984 to 1997, then as a teacher of religious education in Newark, NJ from 1997 to 2000. She continued in community service until 2009 when she officially retired.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Gerald, Harvey, Henry, Wilfred, Lionel, Maurice and Roland Coutu; and by her sisters: Lillian Myers, Yvonne Amatisto, Rita Mastrullo and Doris Chalifoux.
A wake will be held at the Tyngsborough Funeral Home, 4 Cassaway Dr., Tyngsborough, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 18. Her Funeral will be celebrated on Friday, September 19 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of d’Youville Senior Care, 981 Varnum Ave., Lowell. The burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford.
