Sigrid A. (Burmann) Stemmler, age 89, a resident of Dracut, passed away on April 7, 2024 at the High Pointe House in Haverhill. She was the beloved wife of Karl R. Stemmler, with whom she shared over 64 years of marriage.
She was born on March 27, 1935 in Celle, Germany to the late Anton and Antonia (Winkler) Burmann. She was educated in Germany and moved to the United States in 1958 where she met Karl and they married in May 1959. She became a US citizen in 1968.
Sigrid’s family was her life and her main focus. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother; she loved to host family gatherings and cook holiday meals, and she had a talent for making each event special. She and Karl raised their family in Tewksbury, MA and enjoyed many family vacations throughout the US and travels to Germany. In retirement she and Karl spent many happy winters in Bradenton, FL where she was an active member of their association’s activity committee, planning many parties and gatherings at the club house.
Prior to her retirement, Sigrid was employed as a sales clerk for the former Filene’s Department Store at the Burlington Mall. When her children were young she worked for several years in the Tewksbury Public Schools as a library aid.
Surviving her in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Martina Witts and her husband Bruce of Naples, ME; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Stemmler and his wife Marcia of Haverhill, MA; and five grandchildren, Justin Witts, Caroline Witts, Bridget Stemmler, Kirsten Stemmler and Gretchen Stemmler, and many nieces and nephews in the US and in Germany. She was predeceased by her brother Egon Burmann.
A memorial service will be held for both Karl and Sigrid on what would have been their 65th wedding anniversary, on Thursday, May 16th at 10 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 170 Old Westford, RD, Chelmsford, MA. In lieu of flowers, a gift in Karl and Sigrid’s name may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
