Ra Sun, 83, of Lowell, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 1, 2026, surrounded by her beloved family.
Born in Cambodia, Ra Sun was 83 years old at the time of her passing. Although her official records listed her birth date as June 6, 1946, her family knew her true age reflected a longer and richer life journey.
Ra Sun was the eldest of seven children and the cherished daughter of Kaony Srun and Mit Nam. She was raised in a Buddhist and spiritual household that instilled in her the values of compassion, humility, resilience, and unconditional love—qualities that would define her life and touch everyone who knew her.
Ra Sun was a lifelong learner who navigated the world with remarkable wisdom, determination, and grace. The Cambodian Civil War and the Vietnam War brought immense hardship, tearing families apart and leaving deep emotional wounds. Yet despite the suffering she endured, she never allowed adversity to harden her heart. Instead, she responded with kindness, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family. Her strength was not measured by the hardships she survived, but by the love she continued to give despite them.
In 1975, her husband was taken from her during the Khmer Rouge regime, leaving her widowed under tragic circumstances. Faced with unimaginable loss, Ra Sun displayed extraordinary courage and determination. She led her children, niece, and sister to safety, fleeing Cambodia for Thailand before eventually settling in a refugee camp. The journey to freedom was marked by profound sacrifice and heartbreak. After escaping Cambodia, she endured the devastating loss of her youngest daughter, who passed away from malnutrition. Though burdened by grief that few could comprehend, Ra Sun continued to place the needs of others before her own, providing comfort, protection, and hope to those who depended on her.
In the 1980s, Ra Sun immigrated to the United States as a refugee in search of a better future for her family. She first settled in Chicago, Illinois, before moving to Madison, Wisconsin, where she spent many years building a new life through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. Later, she relocated to Lowell, Massachusetts, where she found some of her greatest joy in life: being a grandmother.
Nothing brought Ra Sun more happiness than caring for her grandchildren. She lovingly helped raise Alec, Emily, Gino, Jenny, Alina, and Justin, and later welcomed Sebastian, Julius, Tristan, and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren into her growing family. Her love for them was endless. Whether preparing meals, sharing stories, offering words of encouragement, or simply sitting beside them with a warm smile, she made each grandchild feel deeply loved and cherished. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and belonging, where everyone knew they would be welcomed with open arms.
Ra Sun’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. She opened her heart and home to relatives, friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. She often cared for others as if they were her own children, offering guidance, support, and affection without expecting anything in return. Her kindness created a large extended family that now spans generations and continents. Many lovingly considered her a mother, grandmother, and guiding presence whose compassion helped shape their lives.
To know Ra Sun was to know a woman whose greatest gift was love. She found joy in caring for others, celebrating their successes, easing their burdens, and bringing people together. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Above all, Ra Sun will be remembered as a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, a caring matriarch, and a woman of extraordinary strength and grace. She endured profound loss and hardship throughout her life, yet she never stopped giving, loving, and caring for those around her. Her life was a testament to resilience, selflessness, and the enduring power of family.
Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the values she instilled, and the countless lives she touched with her love. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her. Her love remains a lasting gift that will continue to guide her family for generations to come.
