Karen I. McCarthy, 91, of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, died on January 1st, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. Karen was born in 1931 in Malmberget, Sweden. She graduated from the Skandinaviska Tillskärareakademien in Drottninggatan Stockholm, Sweden and emigrated to New York 1955. She also lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Massachusetts.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years William McCarthy who passed away in their home in Montoursville, Pennsylvania on March 19th, 1998. She is survived by her sons, Kurt McCarthy and his wife Moira and Granddaughter Kayley of Tyngsborough Massachusetts and Kenneth McCarthy and his wife Stephanie of Mechanicsville, Virginia and other nieces and nephews.
She was an accomplished designer, cutter and pattern maker in Sweden and a fitter and seamstress of bridal gowns in the United States. She and her husband owned two businesses, a paint store and a bridal store.
She enjoyed playing patiens (solitaire), watching hummingbirds and especially her grand cats Sweetpee and Tanner. She will be remembered for endearing family and friends with Swedish Folklore. Karen sustained family traditions cooking with her granddaughter the infamous; Pepparkakor (ginger cookies), Vetebröd (coffee bread), Mormor’s Syltkakor (grandma’s jelly cookies) and Swedish Meatballs. In lieu of flowers, please continue her donations to St. Judes and the Veterans Association.
According to her wishes, she will be cremated and interred with her husband at Amelia Veterans cemetery, in Amelia Court House, Virgina.
