Judith (Broadbent) Smith Obituary

Judith A. (Broadbent) Smith, age 78, a resident of Chelmsford Crossing, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She was the wife of the late Marlan “Dan” Smith.

Born in Cambridge, MA on April 13, 1947, Judy was the daughter of the late Theodore and Anne (McCaffrey) Broadbent. She grew up in Stoneham and graduated from Stoneham High School before continuing her education at the Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists. Judy worked for several years as a dental hygienist before later joining the Internal Revenue Service.

Judy had a spirited personality and lived life on her own terms. She enjoyed trying out new recipes, playing cards, and trying her luck with scratch tickets. She was known for her beautiful smile and her affection for animals. A devoted N.E sports fan,  she rarely missed a game of the New England Patriots.  Her door was often open, and at various points in her life, she offered her home as a place of refuge to family and friends in transition or in need.

She is survived by her daughters, Melissa D. Bailey and her husband Brian, and Laurie B. Miller; her grandchildren, Ariel J. Villamizar and Elizabeth F. Miller, and their father Jason Miller; Alexandria A. Smith and her father Thomas Lefebvre, Michaela R. Smith, Joshua T. Bailey, Caleb D. Bailey, and Nathan C. Bailey; her great-grandchildren; and many dear friends. She is also survived by her sisters Ann (Bonnie) Coonan and her husband Everett and Denise Broadbent. She was predeceased by her daughter Melanie D. Smith and her son Michael S. Smith.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Judy’s name to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org/
