Gerald “Jerry” E. Gajnos PhD
Gerald “Jerry” E. Gajnos PhD, age 83, a resident of Hudson, NH, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Lowell General Hospital, with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Sharon L. (Webster) Gajnos who died in 2008.
Born in Bridgeport, CT on November 11, 1937, he was the son of the late John and Minnie (Funaro) Gajnos.
Jerry received his early and high school education in the Bridgeport public school system. He then attended the University of Connecticut and went on to receive his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
He was employed by Western New England University in Springfield, MA for over 35 years, and was the head of their Chemistry Department. He also spent summers doing research for various chemical companies. After retiring, he continued teaching Chemistry at St. Anselm college in NH and UMass Lowell, having worked up to six weeks ago.
As a chemistry professor, Jerry inspired many through his mastery of molecules and experimentation. An avid reader
of action novels, he also took pride in collecting stamps, model trains and sailboats.
Surviving him are two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Harnum and her husband Gary of Tyngsborough and Kimberly Gajnos of Hudson, NH; four grandchildren, Matthew Harnum and his wife Francesca, Christina Harnum, Megan Harnum and Cody Gajnos and his wife Cheyenne; a great grandson, Colson Gajnos; two sisters, Arlene Chuba of New York City and Rosemary Leka of CT; nieces and nephews and his furry friend Misty.
Relatives and friends will be received at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME 4 Cassaway Dr., Tyngsborough on Sunday, June 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. A brief service will take place immediately following at 3 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
