George Page Obituary

George A. Page, 88, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away on Tuesday, October 25 surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Jacqueline (Savard) Page to whom he was married for 63 years. Born in Lowell on February 22, 1934, to the late Madeline (Connolly) and Omer C. Page, George was educated in the Lowell schools. He enlisted with the United States Navy serving on the USS Corry destroyer during the Korean War.  He enjoyed a lengthy career in manufacturing, working in various supervisory capacities in Waltham, Andover and Lowell. In his later years, he worked as a dispatcher for Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell.

In 1955 a chance encounter at a July 3rd South Common carnival led George to meet the love of his life the beautiful Jacqueline Savard. Introduced by a mutual friend, sparks flew. Jackie later complained that "he never even bought me a hot dog..." unaware that George's Irish mother had cautioned him on the way to the carnival to never buy a hot dog for a stranger. This could have cost him the love affair but still he pursued her.  They dated for two years and married on March 2, 1957.  The Owl Diner was their hub and their photo was featured in the menu promoting their slogan "where family and friends come to meet”.

George never let a day go by without telling a joke or funny story. He told so many that people would often say, "George, you should write a book." So, he did, twice. Unpublished of course, his two books, "Keep Dem Laffin” and “Page 2" are a collection of jokes mostly popular to him and even some he created.

A big boxing fan, he frequented Lowell Memorial Auditorium for the Gold Gloves during his younger years. He saw Rocky Marciano (then fighting under the name Rocco Marchegiano) at the Golden Gloves. He was a boxing encyclopedia, often quizzed on the nicknames, win loss record and blockbuster fights of members of the boxing Hall of Fame. He credits this to his God given memory.  He also saw Abbott and Costello at Lowell Memorial performing their famous Who's on First skit on their US bond tour at age 15.

Travel, sports, and the arts were a big part of George’s life.  He enjoyed vacationing in Maine and Hampton Beach; had wonderful trips to Las Vegas and Florida, cruises to Canada, Bermuda, Ireland, London & Paris.  He loved the Red Sox and attended many away games along with countless home games including the 2004 & 2007 World Series.  He enjoyed attending Broadway shows and concerts in New York, Boston, and Tanglewood.

George is survived by his three children: Suzanne Page of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Stephen Page and his wife Ann of Milford, NH; David Page and his wife Marcia of Lowell; his brother Robert Page and his wife Ann Marie of Lowell; his sisters-in-law Pauline Page, wife of the late Omer J. Page; Constance Paré, wife of the late Roger Paré and Frances Savard, wife of the late Arthur Savard.  Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren including Zachary Page, Jason Golden and his wife Emily, Nicholas Golden and his wife Lauren, Summer Golden, Ethan Golden and great-great grandsons Kaelan and Ash Golden as well as many dear nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Madeline Page and Francis Page. He enjoyed many friendships at his Northwood residence these last five years.
