Gary Freitas Obituary

The family of Gary R. Freitas, Executive Chef, aged 58, regret to inform you that he passed away December 28, 2021

Born in Lowell on March 25, 1963, he was a son of Paul A. and Florence E. (Gibson) Freitas of Chelsea, MA. He was educated in the Immaculate Conception Grammar School and St. Joseph High School.  He then attended Bunker Hill College in Boston, the Culinary Institute of America.  Received a degree in Culinary Arts and was a member of the American Culinary Federation from 1989-1996.

Gary spent his younger years working alongside his family at Brentwood Lanes and the Commonwealth House in Lowell, Ma.

He realized his talent, or better, said his "calling” at a very young age. At only 22, Gary became the head chef at the Covered Bridge restaurant in the Hollingsworth Hotel in Hampton, NH, where he would become the owner/operator just one year later. Than at the young age of 34 became the Executive Chef at the Radisson Hotel in Chelmsford serving thousands of weddings and functions.

Some of his most memorable memories were hosting the Epicurean Club of Boston Membership Meeting, Junior Culinary Team of 2002 and numerous Specialty Food Shows.

One that gave him great pride was hosting an elaborate annual Mother’s Day Brunch.

Executive Chef Gary reached beyond his own culinary growth to his community acting as the mentor / coach for vocational culinary students and the ARC coaching students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Gary enjoyed playing music, fishing, and was a "Religiously Devoted" Red Sox fan!

Gary loved his family, friends, and most of all life! His words were always truthful. His laugh and smile were infectious. Those who knew him will miss him. Those who didn't have missed even more!

Surviving him is his cherished son Jacob Freitas, whom he adored, and Jacob’s mother Christine.

His companion in life, “his” Martha.

His parents Paul and Florence Freitas of Lowell, Ma. His brother Paul W. Freitas of Farmington, NH: nieces and nephews, Riley Freitas, Rachel Freitas, Shealy Freitas, Paul M. Freitas, Tyler; a great nephew, T.J.

He was also the brother of the late David C. Freitas formerly of Lowell and his longtime girlfriend Dana Gouveia. And the late Michael C. Freitas and his wife Linda of Lowell, MA
