Alan Ames Sherburne, age 94, a lifelong resident of Tyngsborough, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Mariel (Bither) Sherburne, with whom he shared 72 wonderful years of marriage.
Born on September 9, 1930 at the family home in Tyngsborough, he was a son of the late Maxwell G. and Bernice M. (Upton) Sherburne. He was a graduate of Lowell High School Class of 1948, where he met Mariel and started their life together. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business in 1952.
Alan was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
He worked for several years with his family at Sherburne Lumber and later with his father-in-law at Bither Insurance, and ultimately acquired the business. During this time he furthered his professional career by graduating from Suffolk Law School in 1977.
Alan was an avid tennis player, pilot, fisherman and hunter and loved being outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always ready for his next big fishing trip.
Surviving him in addition to his loving wife Mariel, are his four children, Pamela Sherburne and her husband Thomas Fay, Alan M. Sherburne, Lynn Mangus and her husband Rick, and Carol Hauke and her husband Steven; 11 grandchildren, Tawnya, Melinda, Kali, Macie, Erika, Ricky, Timothy, Bethany, Nathan, Alayna and Paige; and many great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Lucy Edwards and Maxine Williams and her husband Donald; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Gardner Sherburne, Robert Sherburne, Connie Stong, Betty Harlow and Doris Hinlein; and nephew Peter Hinlein.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025 at 11:15 a.m. at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME, 4 Cassaway Dr., Tyngsborough. There will be a viewing prior to the service, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial will take place privately at Sherburne Cemetery.
